Gemerlap dan mencolok. Begitulah penggambaran New York Times tentang kota suci umat Islam, Mekkah. Harian itu menggambarkan Mekkah sebagai bentuk karya elegan peradaban modern yang ditandai dengan sundulan gedung-gedung pencakar langit dan menara jam Makkah yang sangat tinggi. Itu belum termasuk bangunan pusat perbelanjaan mewah ataupun hotel kelas wahid.


Menurut NY Times, penghancuran bangunan peninggalan Ottoman abad ke 18 memang sangat sebanding dengan bangunan terkini meski hal penghancuran itu seharusnya tidak dilakukan. "Ini merupakan bentuk komersialisasi rumah Allah, " papar Sami Angawi, arsitek Saudi yang tengah mengarap riset tentang isu haji.

"Bayangkan saja, bangunan yang berada dekat masjid berdiri apartemen mewah yang disewakan pada pihak swasta selama 25 tahun. Jadi, jika anda ingin melihat pemandangan masjidil Haram maka anda harus membayar tiga kali lipat," katanya seperti dikutip dari NY Times, pekan lalu.

Dalam tulisanya, NY Times juga mengkritik pemerintah Arab Saudi yang dinilai mengabaikan akomodasi pertumbuhan penduduk Mekkah dengan membuat bangunan-bangunan yang justru membuat sempit ruang gerak para calon jamaah haji. "Dari pandangan arsitek, dan pejabat pemerintah, motif dari pembangunan kota Mekkah adalah uang. Buah keinginan untuk mengeruk keuntungan dari kota yang sangat disucikan," kritik NY Times.

Surat kabar itu juga menambahkan ekploitasi secara berlebihan kota Makkah dapat mengancam keberadaan peninggalan Nabi Muhammad SAW. Mentalitas itu yang dinilai NY Times membagi kota suci Mekkah. "Sepanjang pengamatan dapat terlihat bangunan mewah dan ekslusif mengelilingi masjid suci dan membuat kaum miskin kian terpinggirkan," tulis NY TImes.

NY Time mengakui pembangunan kota Mekkah jauh melebih kota besar negara-negara barat seperti New York. Proyek-proyek pembangunan yang ada tidak pernah dibuat sebelumnya, sebuah karya orisinil dari ahlinya.

Tengok saja gaya arsitektur kota tenda karya Frei Otto yang dibuat tahun 1970-an. Bangunan-bangunan ini terdiri dari struktur ringan dapat dilipat. Karya Otto terinspirasi dari tradisi suku nomaden Badui. Bangunan ini dibuat untuk menampung jamaah haji tanpa merusak ekologi halus bukit yang mengelilingi kota tua. Karya itu bukanlah satu-satunya.

Karya luar biasa juga tercermin dalam pembangunan terminal haji di Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, Bandara Internasional King Abdul Aziz. Bangunan terminal begitu menyentuh tradisi lokal dan kearifan lingkungan tanpa menghilangkan sisi modernitasnya
